The beauty spy: Shimmering make up

Yves Saint Laurent once said: "The most beautiful make-up on a woman is passion. But cosmetics are easier to buy."

I think Clarins had this quote in mind when they created my new favourite thing: Passion Face Palette, or to give it its rather more alluring name - Passion Palette Teint. It is a magical little compact face powder that you apply by lightly sweeping over the face and décolleté with a powder brush. I have always resisted face powder, because my granny uses it, but I am now a convert. Not only does it set your foundation, but it really gives you a much more polished look. And a good quality powder such as this one will reflect the light around you and diffuse it all over your face, which then really brightens up your skin. It lends it an almost luminous quality, making it look ultra-smooth.

With any powder you need a lightness of touch to ensure you don't get the caked look that my grandmother is so fond of.

I am utterly mad about this new Clarins product, especially in these pre-festive-season days when I seem to have events on every night. Not only do I practically glow in the dark, but the next day my somewhat jaded demeanour is easily rectified by a quick flick of my powder brush.

But even this little miracle worker can't do it all, so you should invest in something called Watt's Up! by Benefit. It is a highlighter that you can use on your cheeks, brow bones and your eyes. It is so smooth and easy to use and comes with its own little blender. It is a good, neutral colour that works all over, and a great little emergency product if you need an extra boost.

For your lips I suggest MAC's Dazzleglass Brilliant à Lèvres, which is a seriously shimmering range. My favourite is the Dressed to Dazzle, which is between nude and pink, with lots of glitter. Your lips really are dazzling in this and it is a great pick-me-up whenever you feel a tad dowdy.

For the cheeks I go for something a little less shimmery because I don't want to be mistaken for a Christmas tree. Sephora's Hydrating Powder Blush is a great option, as it hydrates as well as giving you a healthy glow. Also from Sephora is the Brightening & Smoothing Concealer with hyaluronic acid, which illuminates the skin, as well as plumping it up. Talk about useful multi-tasking. Altogether now: ready, steady, GLOW!

Warning on fake Christmas presents

Detectives in Airedale and North Bradford are warning people to ensure they are not exchanging their cash for fake goods this Christmas.

They say counterfeit hair straightness, designer clothes, watches, toys and CDs are among the items which commonly go on sale in the area either through markets or websites.

Officers are currently working with partners in trading standards to investigate offences and are advising that many fake products will not comply with UK health and safety regulations while some, such as counterfeit electrical items, could be dangerous.

Fake goods, most notably pirated DVDs, have often been reported for sale in the Bradford and Keighley area, and police have confiscated a number of discs over the past year.

In the latest investigation, detectives investigating counterfeiting, arrested a 53-year-old woman in Bradford on suspicion of offences.

A number of items of computer equipment were seized and the woman was bailed pending further enquiries.

Det Sgt Dave Marston of Airedale and North Bradford police said: “We have received intelligence about the alleged sale of counterfeit goods in Airedale and North Bradford and would advise residents to be careful of what they buy.

As a rule, if something seems too good to be true it almost certainly will be and there are absolutely no guarantees about safety or quality with a lot of these products.

Would you really be happy giving electrical equipment or toys which could be dangerous to a loved one?”

Designer bags are becoming a style statement

Ask any woman and she will tell you how delightful an experience it is for her to own an iconic designer bag. While women and their love for ‘it’ bags has been variously reported and debated upon, if you too, have ever  wondered what is it that makes a designer bag so uber expensive, then checking out the Gucci Artisan Corner will give some insight.

To celebrate its 90th anniversary, the renowned Italian designer label has launched a special initiative in Delhi and Mumbai. The celebrations to take place on December 10 in Delhi, will give a rare platform to all those who want to know what it takes to create an iconic bag.

The brand has flown in its most skilled artisans from Florentine, Italy who will be stationed at custom made workshops to assemble popular and timeless bags from the designer label. And, their customers can experience first hand, the meticulous steps that go in to create an iconic bag.

The craftsmen will be assembling some of the most iconic Gucci bags that can be personalised by hand embossed monogramming of your initials. Clients that make a purchase during this event will also receive a personal letter from the brand’s creative director, Frida Giannini, thanking them for their purchase.

The Mumbai chapter of the event that was held on December 2, saw fashion’s favourite icon and actor Sonam Kapoor at the celebrations. Kapoor says, “I’m glad that Gucci is going back to the archives and getting their classic designs out once again. I’m a self-confessed lover of vintage and I truly believe that nothing speaks better fashion than vintage. I’m quite excited that I now own my very own Stirrup with my initials SK embossed on it right in front of my eyes.”

Actor Monica Dogra says, “I found the Artisan Corner to be a wonderful concept, as often, someone like myself has a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, and the meticulous artistry that goes behind the creation of these handbags.”

The brand’s artisans and Artisan Corner display will be in the New Delhi store on December 10 for public viewing at Gucci Store, Emporio Mall, Vasant Kunj.

Christmas Alert: Fake Designer Gifts Flood British Ports

Major airports and ports in Britain are flooded with counterfeits of major designer brands from China and other Asian countries ahead of Christmas, authorities say.

The UK Border Agency counterfeit team at Heathrow is making huge seizures of fake products every day at the airport. According to them, 70 percent of the fake products are coming from China. Products from India, Thailand and Turkey are also flooding the ports, the Daily Mail has reported.

"This has been our busiest year yet. We are making seizures every day and across a huge range of goods," the Daily Mail has quoted Peter Herron, member of the Border Agency counterfeit team in Heathrow, as saying.

The urge to go bargain-hunting in hard times encourages the flow of fake products into the country. And it is very difficult for  consumers to tell the fake product from the original.

The seized items include fakes of bracelets from Links of London, Mont Blanc fountain pens, Cath Kidston handbags, UGG boots, make-up from fashionable brands such as Mac and Bobbi Brown and Jo Malone scented candles. There are Rolex watches and all the latest gizmos such as the iPad 2 and iPhone 4 among the items seized over the past couple of weeks at the Heathrow airport.

Children's favourites like Hello Kitty jewellery boxes, the latest Nintendo DS, soft toys from TV show In The Night Garden, Smurfs and familiar faces from Thomas the Tank Engine also make an entry through the ports.

In the past few days, the counterfeit team at the Heathrow has seized two consignments of fake Dr Dre headphones estimated to be worth more than £38,000. Another big haul at Southampton docks found 45,000 pairs of fake Ugg boots which is estimated to be worth millions of pounds, the newspaper has reported.

There are also incidents of these fake products featuring in popular online websites like eBay and Amazon. A study by Which? magazine found out that 23 per cent of goods bought from Web sites, including online giants Amazon and eBay, were not genuine and there were no indications that these companies would be aware, the Daily Mail has reported.

According to the survey by Which?, one in 10 people have bought counterfeit products without realizing it. Statistics from the Intellectual Property Office has revealed that 7 percent of all goods sold in Britain are believed to be counterfeit, the newspaper report has pointed out.

Majority of these products are not made according to the EU standards and pose serious health problems to the people. Many of these products are not made in a sterile environment and often contain banned ingredients.

Here is the list of some of the fake items in branded labels that can be found in the shopping centers across the country, according to Christine Heemskerk, lead officer in consumer and product safety for the Trading Standards Institute.

Hello Kitty jewellery Box: Though it is very popular with preteen girls, the counterfeit of the product could cause serious health issues. "It is likely the jewellery box is made using phthalates, which means there are health concerns," Heemskerk told the Daily Mail.

"The headphones probably won't have the right volume controls and could damage young ears. The lamp is a fire risk - the shade could melt - and the wiring is suspect," she added.

Dr Dre headphones: Fake copies of the designer headphones are abundant in the market which may not even last for Boxing Day, Grant Miller, senior detection manager of the freight division at Heathrow, told the Daily Mail.

Links of London friendship bracelet: It may not be made from sterling silver like the originals and may contain banned metals which could cause rash, warned Heemskerk, according to the Daily Mail.

Precious Limited Edition Gift Set: The hair straightener and hair dryer have not been tested for EU standards, warned Heemskerk.

There are also fake copies of Walt Disney complete DVD, Cath Kidston Day bag, UGG Australia boots, Bobbi Brown make-up brush which are not made according to the safety standards, warn the experts.

Luxury Beauty PR: MAC Cosmetics co-brands

Style icon and heiress to the Guinness fortune, Daphne Guinness, has partnered with MAC Cosmetics for a collection debuting December 26th. And while Guinness is well known for her couture and almost theatrical-like fashion, this cosmetics line is very subdued...even completely wearable for most skin tones.

Featured products in this collection are Pro Longwear Lipcremes, Cremesheen Glass, eyeshadow quad, pigments, blush and nail lacquers (and a few other items, as well.) I'm honestly loving the quad pictured, as well as the Narcissus Cremesheen Glass, which is described as a dirty eggplant color.

Guinness is said to have been very involved in the creation of this line, which makes me think this is her best work of art yet. Tweet us your thoughts @PierceMattiePR.

Jonathan Saunders: 'I want to make women feel good'

Britain is at present populated by a crowd of excellent fashion designers so jostling that Health and Safety might want to stick on its sunglasses take a look. Jonathan Saunders, 34, has been part of this renaissance ever since his first collection in 2004. Now, though, he has shimmied his way right to its forefront. During London Fashion Week, where show after show after show can soon spark an ugly weariness amongst the high-heeled onlookers, it is to the Saunders catwalk - along with Christopher Kane's and lately Mary Katrantzou's - that they really skip. Only over the last 18 months or so, with Anna Wintour in his front row and both Samantha Cameron and Michelle Obama in his clothes, has his star really risen.

Just a glance at his zingily pulsating, colour-drenched clothes confirms Saunders' appetite for brightness. It is this - along with his never-the-same prints and the increasingly attractive silhouettes cast with them - that has helped propel him to prominence.

Personally, too, his brightness is not easily supressed. Yet he seems glum, even (he's Scottish) borderline-dour on the morning we meet. It emerges that Saunders is suffering from an evil cold, nagging post-birthday blues, and the terrible realisation that the flat he's trying to sell might well have damp. Add to this a painfully cracked rib (whether picked up at Fitness First or during a bout of more personal gymnastics, he's unsure) and that glumness makes sense as rapidly as it passes. A coffee, a cigarette, and an enthusiastic pawing from his 8 year-old Battersea dog, Amber, and Saunders is revived.

Through curls of smoke he rattles out his USP, making it sound simple: "I've never been one for a black pencil skirt, or just a basic working wardrobe. I want to introduce something into a woman's wardrobe that is highly identifiable, and that makes them feel good: something special. And the tools that I use to give them that are colour and print."

This formula is now so refined it has a heady hand-to-pocket effect. Even the pickiest customers of all, fashion magazine staff, patiently queued (itself a rare sight) to buy (albeit at cost-price) at a recent Saunders "selling event" held by Matches, one of his main stockists. Although not there (the dresses don't suit me) I heard the turnout was borderline unprecedented. He says "I got almost as much fulfilment from that event as I did from the show. Because it's verification to see such interest in what you're doing from a wearibility point of view." (A polite way of saying its much more meaningful when fashion opinion-formers buy your clothes than just blithering about them.) Furthermore, he adds: "you learn a lot when you listen to what women say about how they want to wear it, what they need it to be."

Jonathan Saunders spring/summer 2012

Yet Saunders refuses to appear even fleetingly smug. "Things shift constantly," he says, chin set :"that's the nature of the beast. I have to get better and better in what I do and learn from each collection."

What he has now got - a growing business based in this ramshackle building on a fume-clogged Islington corner, and seemingly enough critical petrol to keep motoring - Saunders is resolute about keeping.

He left home in Burnside, Glasgow on his 16th birthday went to Glasgow School of Art. Then "I got to London on a bus. I didn't have any money at all", and decided to study at Central St Martin's after meeting British fashion's Simon Cowell-scary, pre-eminent talent-spotter, Professor Louise Wilson. "What she hates most is if your work looks like anything else." This, he believes, is why so many of that jostling, Wilson-trained crowd of young fashion designers get on so well: "Mem Christopher [KANE] Richard [Nicholl] and Roksanda [Ilincic] are all good mates, and its because none of us want to be like eachother."

Wilson allowed Saunders (who thanks to being Scottish had his fees paid but was otherwise unfunded) to take a job at a printers, where for a year he would secretly sneak back after work and sleep in a cupboard he'd furnished with a mattress - "it was very comfortable: I've had worse beds".

Saunders is carefully positive about how his early upbringing equipped him for life. "Every teenager rebels against what they're brought up with, and me it just happened to be a bit more extreme."

This is because his parents are third-generation Jehovah's Witnesses. He says: "They're very devout in what they believe and they live by the principles of the religion very tightly. My parents happened to be quite strict. But that's not necessarily a negative thing, it taught me to be a certain way."

To become a fashion designer, however, it was a course he had to stray from. "They embrace humility. Anything that involves putting yourself out there, saying 'look at me, this is what I can do' is frowned upon. And anything you do on a creative level has to be practical, craftsmanship."

Jonathan Saunders for Smythson
This is why his first degree was in product design and his second in textile design, he believes - "In a craft context rather than a frivolous context". Yet in the final analysis, he says, this at-odds with his character upbringing has proved "maybe a positive thing. It's certainly made me very independent, and equipped me to be my boss and have my own label."

He had good luck in London when his graduate collection caught the eye of Alexander McQueen, who would become a close friend and commissioned a print. This led to work at various fashion houses - Chloe and Lacroix - before he founded his own. Now their are high-street collaborations (Target in the United States and Debenham's here), plus money-spinning work with Escada and Smythson.

Saunders uses references aplently - often modernism and 20th century artists. For spring/summer 2012, however, he went back a notch, "to ornate Edwardian pattern, William Morris - something that I never really liked. It's working with things that make me feel uncomfortable: total Prada-ism."

Today, his fashion-designer insecurity (they all seem to have them) seems to be whether he really counts as one at all. "Do you think of me as a print designer?" he suddenly demands "Just as a print brand?... No: I'm definitely a fashion designer now."

As soon as this doubt passes, The Daily Telegraph cruelly raises another one by pointing out that his company is closish to its ten year anniversary. He reaches aghast for the reassuring ear of Amber. "Not yet babes," says Saunders, "Not yet."

Scanner tales: Stories from Braintree police log

Three Quincy men were arrested on Sunday for allegedly assaulting an attendant at the Super Petroleum gasoline station in Braintree, as well as customer who came to the attendant’s aid.

According to police, the two victims and two other customers said that one of the suspects had argued with the attendant over the payment for a cup of coffee. The man allegedly threw the coffee at the attendant, which caused three of the suspect’s companions to get out of their vehicle and come inside.

A customer, a 38-year-old Weymouth man, stepped forward to intervene, when he was punched in the head by three of the men and knocked to the ground. There, they continued to punch and kick him.

The man suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The four men fled from the station, located on Quincy Avenue, before police arrived. But they were later found outside the Quincy home of the registered owner of the vehicle they had fled in.

Several Quincy officers responded to arrest the men.

Giovanni H. Cesar, 22; Rihad A. Al-Khatib, 19; and Nadeem H. Al-Khatib, 21, all of Quincy, were arrested Sunday afternoon and returned to Braintree. There they were charged with assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

The fourth man involved in the incident was not charged and his name not released.

Four arrested at Plaza for shoplifting
Four people were arrested last weekend in two unrelated incidents after each pair allegedly stole items from stores in the South Shore Plaza.

According to police, two Quincy residents were arrested Friday afternoon after allegedly stealing clothing from Hollister in the mall.

Loss prevention officers reported to police that the couple was observed selecting articles of clothing, removing the security sensors, and concealing the clothing in their shopping bags.

Approximately $300 of clothing, all damaged from removed sensor tags, was recovered along with $200 of clothing believed to have been stolen from the Gap, police said.

Thomas P. Griffin, 43, and Sharon L. Holmes, 39, of Quincy were placed under arrest and charged with larceny over $250, malicious destruction of property, and receiving stolen property under $250.

A day later, on Saturday, police were called to Lord & Taylor after loss prevention observed a woman run out of the store with three pairs of UGG slippers – totaling $330 in value.

She sped off in a waiting Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck operated by a white male.

Loss prevention was able to obtain the vehicle’s registration, and a computer query led officers to an address in Weymouth. Further investigation led police to believe they had identified the first suspect.

On Sunday, police were called again to Lord & Taylor after the same woman was observed in the store selecting more pairs of UGG slippers. Once again, the woman fled from the store and entered a Chevrolet pickup occupied by a white male, police said.

An officer working a traffic detail nearby saw the pickup and followed it to Macy’s, where he stopped and confronted the pair.

Three pairs of UGG slippers, along with $200 of clothing believed to have been stolen from Victoria’s Secret, was recovered, police said.

Katelyn M. Keeley, 24, of Weymouth and Camilo Arrendo, 22, of Quincy were arrested and charged with larceny over $250 and receiving stolen property under $250. Keeley was additionally charged with a second count of larceny over $250 for the Saturday night incident.

2011's Odd new trends and fashions

Fashion is constantly changing for both men and women. This year, Bay Port is becoming exposed to even more funky and odd trends.Last year, strange trends including Silly Bandz and Ugg or Emu boots were worn by most of the student body. Even today, the winter boots are still worn by many.

“Boots are warmer and just easier to wear in general,” says Sarah Hibbard, junior at Bay Port. “I think I own about eight pairs of different boots.” Sarah shops online for the majority of her boots and holds a weakness for the “cute ones you can just slip on.”
Cowboy boots are huge right now! After American Idol’s Lauren Alaina arrived on the show, women fell in love with her chic cowgirl style. Stores around Green Bay including Journeys, Payless, and the Buckle market the hot merchandise. But rather than selling plain cowboy boots, stores sell funky patterned pairs that may have spur straps dangling atop the foot.

On the field, flow is an intimidation factor,” says senior Bj Ford. “I mean, when you're out there and you get matched up against a guy on offense or defense and he's got handfuls of hair coming out of the back of his helmet, you know you're in trouble”. For over a year now, high school athletes have been embracing the long hair look. “It's not only the hair though,” says Ford, “flow also means the kind of swagger a player has on and off the Lacrosse field.”

Besides looking intimidating on the field, having the flow creates an individual style for men. “If you're walking around the hallways just letting it all hang out, running your hands through it, and otherwise displaying that swagger, you've got flow” says Ford.
But for men whose flow is not as far along as Fords, its all about maintaining the look along the way. “I condition, shampoo, condition, and condition again,” says sophomore Tanner Laskowski. “The flow defines awesomeness,” says Laskowski, “I mean, Jesus had it and look where he is.”
Although most Bay Port students would agree that BJ Ford ultimately wins award for the best hairdo, Ford recognizes Travis Falk for the best flow around school. “The guy's got swagger,” says Ford about senior Travis Falk, “and if it wasn't for the fact that he had to get his hair cut for football, he'd be the best example of flow at Bay Port High School.”

My sister and her friends got feather clip-ins last year in Oshkosh and when they came home from college they were so cute that I had to buy one!” says junior Bobbi Blau. But feathers are not only popular as hair accessories. More and more women have began to wear them as jewelry pieces including earrings, necklaces, and bracelets.

“They’re inexpensive and fairly easy to use,” says Blau about the hair feather clip-ins. “You can also match them with any outfit.” Currently, Blau has five feather hair clip-ins including blue, green, brown, white, and black colored pieces.
But instead of selling clip-ins like Walmart and Claire’s do, Salons now have permanent feather clip’ins for hair so “you don’t need to worry about them falling out,” says Blau.
Lace is not new, but is beginning to be worn in new ways.  More women are wearing lace while still embracing the floral look. Whether it is a floral dress with lace ruffles or a floral shirt with lace sleeves, girls go “gaga” for lace!
“Floral is really girly and goes good with anything,” says junior Morgan McKindles, “however, lace is girly as well and can dress up pretty much any outfit.” McKindles says that “girls who aren't that girly can wear lace and it can still match whatever style they’re going for.”
Both patterns are being worn by women constantly, whether it is to school or to work. However, lace seems to be consuming last year’s floral fetish. “Lace has a lot in common with floral idea,” says junior Abbey Frisinger, “really, lace and floral go hand in hand.”
“What isn’t special about Toms?” says junior Jordan Hyland. “They’re so comfy and cute!” Both men and women call the creator of the shoe a “genius.” “They’re super comfortable and are a stylish way to give to those in need,” says junior Autumn Andres who currently owns thee pairs. With every purchased pair, the organization (Tom) gives a pair to a child in need. The brand began selling online at Toms.com and at Zumiez.

As trends continue altering throughout the year, some odd styles will grasp onto high school students longer than others. During the first semester of last year, students went loco for Silly Bandz. Now, hardly anyone wears them. Whether fashions stick or leave will only be revealed in the future.

UKBA targets a ''counterfeit Christmas''

The UK Border Agency has put on show the vast array of counterfeit goods that are pouring into the UK in the run up to Christmas.

They include fake UGG Boots, GHD hair straighteners, beauty products, Nike shoes, iPhones, iPads, Thomas the Tank Engine toys, Pandora bracelets, Nintendo DS game consoles, and many other items.

Grant Miller of the UK Border Agency's Heathrow International Trade Division said: "Buyers can be left with products which are at best, inferior to genuine ones and, at worst, harmful or unsafe. We are uncovering all sorts of fake goods ... and we're warning people to be particularly wary of buying cheap items online or from unofficial traders. It's easy to be tricked into thinking you're getting a bargain, but in the run up to Christmas our message is that if something appears too good to be true it probably is."

The immigration minister Damian Green added: "We are dealing with a huge criminal business. The international trade in counterfeit goods is serious organised crime and, for the gangs behind it, it is low-risk and high-reward. Intellectual property crime is a serious economic threat, and it's estimated to be worth around £1.3bn in the UK each year.

"That is why we have UK Border Agency officers operating 24 hours a day at ports, airports and mail sorting centres and they have seized thousands of counterfeit items that could otherwise have ended up as gifts this Christmas."
